Nelson Mandelabridge Zoetermeer

In December 2022, it was found that the Nelson Mandela Bridge over the A12 near Zoetermeer had serious issues. The bridge, consisting of four concrete beams resting on pillars, had to be removed after inspection.

However, this bridge forms a crucial connection between Zoetermeer North and the Zoetermeer train station, and it was essential to maintain this connection for pedestrians and cyclists. According to the municipality, the restoration of the Nelson Mandela Bridge is expected to take several more years.

To quickly provide a temporary solution, Janson Bridging was asked to supply a standard bridge section. From their stock, Janson Bridging could deliver a bridge 48 meters long and 7 meters wide, which could be placed on the remaining bridge sections. For this, the A12 had to be closed for almost a week. At the end of January, the temporary bridge, equipped with planks and ramps, was opened for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. This operation was described as ‘a colossal task in a crisis situation.’

Janson Bridging was able to deliver a temporary solution quickly due to several key factors:

  • Extensive Experience: Janson Bridging has over 50 years of experience in designing, constructing, and installing modular steel bridges. This extensive background allows them to efficiently handle emergency situations.
  • Modular Systems: Their bridge systems are modular, meaning they can be quickly assembled and customized to fit specific needs. This flexibility is crucial in emergency scenarios where time is of the essence.
  • Large Inventory: They maintain a large stock of bridge components, which enables them to respond rapidly to urgent requests. For the Nelson Mandela Bridge, they had a suitable bridge section readily available.
  • Efficient Logistics: With subsidiaries in multiple countries and a robust logistics network, Janson Bridging can quickly transport and install bridge components.

These factors combined allowed Janson Bridging to provide a 48-meter long and 7-meter wide temporary bridge in a short timeframe, ensuring the vital connection for pedestrians and cyclists was maintained.
