History: Traffic bridge S113 - Diemen
New traffic bridge over the Weespertrekvaart in Diemen
To ensure smooth traffic flow in Diemen, an outdated steel bridge over the Weespertrekvaart was replaced in 2005. The original riveted structure could no longer handle heavy traffic, prompting the need for a safe and durable replacement.
Challenge
The existing bridge structure was no longer suitable for heavy vehicle loads. Additionally, a temporary detour was needed to maintain safe local traffic flow. The replacement had to be completed efficiently with minimal disruption to both road and water traffic.
Approach
We managed the full design, engineering, and execution of the new traffic bridge. The scope of work included:
- Creating an integral design for the new bridge structure
- Removing the existing steel superstructure
- Modifying abutments, piers, and connecting roads
- Installing navigation and drainage facilities
- Supplying and installing a JSB 2 traffic bridge
- Relocating light poles and completing paving works
- Implementing, maintaining, and removing traffic management measures
Throughout the project, we worked according to a quality assurance system based on NEN-EN-ISO 9001:2000.
Results
The new bridge provides a safe and smooth connection across the Weespertrekvaart. Thanks to our modular solution and efficient planning, the bridge was delivered on time. Both road users and waterway traffic experienced minimal inconvenience.
Key Learnings
- An integral design combined with modular construction significantly reduces project lead time
- Close coordination with local authorities and utility companies avoids delays
- Early preparation of both land and water traffic measures is essential in bridge projects
